THE DESIGNATED MOURNER is the story of three people
living in a society where intellectuals are becoming persecuted
by the government: HOWARD, a poet, essayist and intellectual who
comes from a privileged background but has been at odds for
decades with the right-wing regime; JUDY, his daughter, a subtle,
witty and yet deeply emotional intellectual, who reveres her
father; and JACK, Judy's husband, who has seemingly relinquished
both culture and his own intellectual curiosity.
As the political situation becomes more intense, the issue of
what sort of books people like to read and how they choose to
amuse themselves becomes both grimly personal and unexpectedly entangled with questions of survival.

"THE DESIGNATED MOURNER worms its way into the consciousness
long after the performance is over…unsettling, ominous…
the detached tone in which horrific events are recounted exert a
hypnotic power." —The New York Times

"THE DESIGNATED MOURNER is highly unconventional and much concerned with matters of politics, culture, and human significance.
This is a play that does not simply discuss what it is like to be arrested
late at night by jack-booted goons or for human beings to fall morally
apart at the seams…it has the originality to make you feel it."
—Times (London)
